In December, CSC’s Maria Elena Kuykendall, Community Advisor for our Power of Families Project, was the featured guest on “Temas En Tulsa,” a television program dedicated to the growing Latino community in Oklahoma. Kuykendall shared with Tulsa Community College’s Tina Peña, show host and CSC board member, how CSC is supporting Tulsa’s Latino community.
Specifically, Kuykendall discussed how our Power of Families Project, a program of our Education Division, has used promotoras as a strategy to connect to the Latino community for more than three years, and highlighted the training each promotora receives to adapt to the purposes of our program. Additionally, Kuykendall reviewed the development of Community Service Council’s partnership with Tulsa Community College and Comunidad Esperanza to coordinate the first Promotora Certification course through TCC, with 23 promotoras graduating from the inaugural fall 2017 program and a waiting list set up for the second certification program in spring 2018. The course introduced students to seven modules structured for certification, all establishing the role of the promotora, or community lay adviser, as a link, bridge or connector to the community.
